Peru may be known for a lot of things but one of its lesser known traits is the quality of treks that people on active holidays enjoy taking part in every year. For great walking holidays the trail leading upto Machu Picchu is one of the most exciting treks you can do on this planet. If you love to walk or trek then the Inca Trail with Machu Picchu being the sight that greets you at the end is quite simply found nowhere else. With a road that is 500 year old you really don't get a more historic or mysterious atmosphere when walking the Inca Trail anywhere else on the globe.

Sitting at top some of the tallest mountains in Peru the Machu Picchu fortress is quite breathtaking. It truly is a great feat of engineering sitting 4,000 feet above the Urubamba River below with granite for its walls one can only imagine the time and effort it took to build monument to the Mayan empire.

It is a 40 mile walk that never goes below 8,500 feet and for huge sections of the walk you will find yourself at 11,000 feet or above so do not be fooled into thinking this will be easy. Be warned that if you think you might suffer from altitude sickness then this walk is probably not a good idea because there is no medical help to be had. Don't be too worried about the trek enjoy the rolling mountain sides as you ascend to the summit.

Beware of altitude sickness and take it easy because there is no structure in place to take care of you if you start feeling ill while on the trail. Make sure you arrange a guide before you climb the mountain beacuse it is now compulsory otherwise you will find yourself sitting around without being allowed on the mountainside.

Peru holidays are life changing experiences so if you don't want to exhaust yourself traking the ancient trail the Mayans took then there is always the train which will only take a day of your time and allow you to see the magnificent ruins on Machu Picchu.
