In skydiving, a jumper exits an airplane at heights of 10,000-18,000 feet (3,050-5,500 m) and moves through the air – downwards and horizontally – before opening a parachute.

At the point of exiting the plane, the force of gravity is far stronger than that of air resistance, causing a rapidly accelerating descent. After a few seconds, and a few hundred or a thousand feet, the two forces become equal and the jumper reaches terminal velocity. This speed varies according to the person’s body and posture, but will be between 120-180 mph (193-290 kph).

The actual speed depends on the size of an individual’s body and the posture assumed. Most people position their bodies with the arms spread out and the face and belly pointing to the ground, but higher speeds can be achieved through a diving-like posture with head down, arms together or by the side and legs together.

Once the jumper pulls the parachute cord, the main canopy is released. It fills with air, increasing the air resistance, which causes deceleration. The descent will slow down to a safe landing speed of about 10 mph.

The risks of skydiving (malfunctioning equipment, turbulence, mid-air collisions, etc.) are relatively low, with only about 1 jump in 100,000 leading to a fatality every year, but it's important to be alert and safety conscious at all time.

Training requirements vary according to the type of skydiving an individual intends to do. You can put in anything from one to eight hours of training, depending on whether you are preparing for tandem, static line or AFF (accelerated free fall) jumps. Training will teach you how to jump from the plane, use complex gear safely and effectively, and land safely. It will also cover basic physics on how the jumper’s body and parachute work together and will outline various falling and maneuvering techniques.

Skydiving isn’t cheap. It can cost between $50 and $200 for a jump, depending on the type of skydive and the status, facilities and location of the skydiving school. Equipment is not always provided by the school and skydivers may need factor in the expense of buying or hiring gear.

In tandem jumping – a popular way to start skydiving – a beginner jumper and an instructor are attached together by a harness. They exit the plane and descend together, remaining attached throughout.

The instructor has complete control of the jump, including the free fall, canopy release and landing. He or she steers the two attached jumpers both horizontally and vertically; the novice can simply relax and enjoy the jump.

This lets a beginner experience skydiving with the least possible training, risk and stress. Many people follow tandem jumping with static line or accelerated freefall training, and ultimately with solo jumping. Tandem jumping is also usually cheaper than other options as jumper need very little instruction and need not buy or hire their own equipment.

Whereas most jump programs require several hours of ground instruction, very little training is needed to do a tandem jumping as a student. The novice must learn how to cooperate with the instructor in exiting the plane and descending, but this will usually take less than a couple of hours.

Within a few seconds of the two jumpers exiting the plane, the instructor will release the drogue – a small pilot chute. This helps slow the descent to the normal free fall speed of roughly 120 mph (193 kph). Without the drogue, the combined weight of the student and the instructor would result in a descent speed of about 200 mph (321 kph), a speed that no novice jumper should experience.

At about 3000 feet (914m) above ground level, the instructor will pull a cord, releasing the main parachute canopy. Once the chute is fully deployed, the rate of descent will slow down and will be about 10 mph (16 kph) when the tandem jumpers land.

Due to the popularity of indoor skydiving more and more cities around the country are starting to build indoor wind tunnels. Las Vegas indoor skydiving is a sport that is not only enjoyed by everyday vacationers but also by the famous who want to have some form of escape. Because indoor skydiving is less expensive than traditional skydiving it has become more popular and it is also a safer way to experience the thrill of skydiving.  

Training

When going to an indoor skydiving tunnel in Las Vegas for the first time, individuals will have to participate in  skydiving lessons so that they are aware of the basic safety information and flying techniques so that they can get started without becoming injured.   Many of the best indoor skydiving tunnels in Las Vegas will offer these classes on a repeating basis throughout the day so that individuals can come at any time and get into a class within the half hour of their arrival. You will be able to take your first flight after the class is completed. Individuals will be able to take the plunge and practice once they have the basic techniques down.

If you have an interest in traditional skydiving from an airplane then a good starting point would be Las Vegas indoor skydiving. Since the velocity of the wind tunnel air is normally around 120 miles/hr a person can indulge in free falling techniques to prepare for an airplane jump.   There are expert skydivers that will also use the indoor skydiving wind tunnels in Las Vegas so that they can gain more air time without the cost of going up in the plane to do so.

In order to participate in indoor skydiving in Las Vegas, individuals should wear comfortable clothing and have to be at least forty pounds. For saftey reasons children will need to be accommpanied by their parents in order to participate. If there rules and safety procedures are complied with then any ages can participate in indoor skydiving since there is such a low rate of injury. The height to weight ratio will set the criteria used to qualify an individual to take the indoor skydiving flight. If you are a man you cannot weigh more than 180lbs if your are under 5' 6". For a women the weight limitation is 160lbs and the height is 5' 6".

After you have been mentally and physically psyched for jumping out the plane there is also the technique of keeping your body in the correct position and precisely direct your fall towards a predetermined landing area.  Then the chute would open and hopefully land you safely on the big red X.

Obviously, you can't just jump out of a plane completely unprepared. Skydiving lessons are a necessity, not just a good idea. There is of course a small degree of danger associated with extreme sky diving, so lessons are an absolute must. Skydiving certification can be obtained relatively quickly, depending on the particular skydiving instructors and methodology used. Sometimes you can become certified in as little as two days.

Be sure to pay careful attention during your classes and ask any questions about anything you are not totally clear on. There is literally nothing unimportant covered in skydiving lessons. Don't worry about sounding silly in class, everyone was new at this at one time, even the instructor. You will learn hand signals to communicate while in the air, how to operate your equipment, all the necessary information will be covered in your skydiving lessons. Again, and this cannot be stressed enough, pay attention and ask lots of questions.

Many well trained skydivers have suffered fatal accidents. It is necessary to have a healthy respect for the particular extreme sport you are involved in.  Jumping out of a plane at an extreme altitude is nothing to take lightly.

An extreme skydiving adventure is no time to learn the basics.  Remember the old Boy Scout moto: "Be prepared."

The equipment used is as important as the classes you have taken. Your survival will be determined on the parachute as well as the operator.
