Taking skiing lessons is the topic for this part of our learn to ski guide.

It will take about a week of lessons from a professional ski instructor at a ski school, but by the end of that week, you will have learned to ski correctly. Once you have learned the basics, you will have the skills and confidence necessary to safely avail yourself of the runs available at the resort where you have opted to stay. There are a number of things you need to consider before signing up at a ski school though, as they can vary significantly in terms of purpose, quality and cost. The following are some of the basic things you should consider:

Does the school specialize in one or the other of group or private lessons, or does it offer both? Private lessons are much more expensive than group ones but all of the ski instructors attention is concentrated on you and you‘ll make quicker progress. Many people find being in a class can be more fun though, since you can meet a lot of new people and learn from the experiences of others. For first timers especially, class instruction seems to be the preferred choice.

If opting for group lessons, it’s advisable to first find out the number of students in a class. While it is dependent on how the school manages the students, an ideal class size should be no larger than seven or eight students. Try to avoid schools that claim they can teach larger class sizes, because quality instruction will not be the school’s goal, but rather its focus will be to make money.

Who they’re catering for is also important; beginners, intermediates, experts or all levels? It is important that you are assigned to the same class as others with your same skill level. In order to assess your abilities before placing you in a class, a school might ask you to participate in an instructor-supervised test of sorts where you will be asked to ski down a couple of slopes and show them how well you are able to turn. As with learning anything new, it is better to start a little below where you believe your abilities lie, and if it turns out that you are at a higher level, then simply ask the school to move you to the more appropriate class.

Also, do they divide classes by age or sex? Some schools will narrow the focus of the classes to one or more specific groups, and others will welcome whoever signs up. You will find that the more specific a school is in its instruction criteria, the higher the quality of your learning experience, as you will benefit from learning in an appropriate age setting (whether adult or child), and in a gender-specific group.

What it is, who it attracts and where to go are topics for this part of our how to surf guide.

The sport of surfing involves a surfboard (usually a polyurethane foam core with a fiberglass shell), and you on that board paddling into the surf, looking to catch a wave on its way to the shore.

It's participated in by men, women and children of all ages, who are attracted by the fun and sense of freedom that it offers. The only things you need to learn how to surf are physical fitness and the ability to swim well, because it's risky otherwise. Even though surfing is far less dangerous than many other sports, it still contains dangers of it's own.

A good place to surf is along a shoreline with waves coming in at over a meter in height, and with the right weather, surfing can be an all-year long sport. Surfing is fairly inexpensive as sports go; the most money you will spend will be on buying a quality board. It's also possible to rent surfboards (and also a wetsuit should you want to) on the beach at popular surf locations.

The basics of surfing are easy to understand, but it takes practice and time to implement them. It's very possible to learn on your own the art of surfing and by simply talking to others whom already surf and observing the form, many are happy to share tips and techniques with the newcomers. It's always best to get some lessons from a professional surfer. This will be, by far, the fastest and safest way you can learn how to surf.

Within a day or so of starting, you'll likely be able to stand on your surfboard and ride little waves. Not only will you want to be learning how to surf, the knowledge of how waves work along with the ocean's currents is vital. He or she will also teach when you should go out in the water, what type of wave is the best to catch and when you should just sit on the shoreline and watch those waves come in.

Tandem jumping is the focus of this installment of our go skydiving guide.

In tandem jumping – a popular way to start skydiving – a beginner jumper and an instructor are attached together by a harness. They exit the plane and descend together, remaining attached throughout.

The instructor has complete control of the jump, including the free fall, canopy release and landing. He or she steers the two attached jumpers both horizontally and vertically; the novice can simply relax and enjoy the jump.

This lets a beginner experience skydiving with the least possible training, risk and stress. Many people follow tandem jumping with static line or accelerated freefall training, and ultimately with solo jumping. Tandem jumping is also usually cheaper than other options as jumper need very little instruction and need not buy or hire their own equipment.

Whereas most jump programs require several hours of ground instruction, very little training is needed to do a tandem jumping as a student. The novice must learn how to cooperate with the instructor in exiting the plane and descending, but this will usually take less than a couple of hours.

Within a few seconds of the two jumpers exiting the plane, the instructor will release the drogue – a small pilot chute. This helps slow the descent to the normal free fall speed of roughly 120 mph (193 kph). Without the drogue, the combined weight of the student and the instructor would result in a descent speed of about 200 mph (321 kph), a speed that no novice jumper should experience.

At about 3000 feet (914m) above ground level, the instructor will pull a cord, releasing the main parachute canopy. Once the chute is fully deployed, the rate of descent will slow down and will be about 10 mph (16 kph) when the tandem jumpers land.

If you have been rafting for a while in the USA and you think you know everything there's to know about rafting, you might be astonished with whitewater rafting around Nova Scotia since it is a very different experience! Nova Scotia rafting is unique in that down its rivers there can be places where tidal waves can form! The force of water which travels through the narrowing in the river can create white water waves that will reach up to 16 feet high. There can be no doubt, some of the best rafting action can be found here. Catching the highest tide will provide you with the most white water rafting fun in Nova Scotia. At times Nova Scotia rivers have risen as much as 30 additional feet while rafters battle down them. This can provide some exciting moments when those white water waves are at their highest. However obviously it can be dangerous and for this reason a lot of rivers are not safe for children and or an experienced rafters.

Finding the Right Rapid for You

It goes without saying that there are going to be a range of different rapids that requires less or more experience. There are going to be rapids that require at least some experience and expertise, whereas others will be okay under guidance for the general public. White water rafting in Nova Scotia offers a variety of rafting packages to choose from and rafting trips which include children are generally safe and relaxing. On the high-end if you are searching for the more violent rapids you have yet to find with your american white water rafting you shouldn't come across any problem finding good trips as well, however for most of these you will be required to be at these 12 years old. These rapids are certainly action packed, but you will still be able to enjoy a pretty awesome scenic view.

For those that already have practice with american white water rafting and or other places rafting around the area of Nova Scotia can provide you a more intense rafting experience. Rafting on tidal waves in Nova Scotia is something new, something that no seasoned rafter would have found in the US, so if you're looking for something more, Nova Scotia is the place to go.

Nova Scotia offers something new and exciting for all who embrace outdoor sports, whether they be experienced rafters or not. For one Nova Scotia's rivers provide something new for rafting and also Nova Scotia has beautiful countryside and will provide a beautiful place to be at one with nature.
