Ebike Bike Racks

June 29th, 2009

There are basically two kinds of ebike bike racks. There are bike racks for storing your ebike on your car to transport it somewhere and bike racks that actually fit ON your bike so you can tote things with you on your bike ride. A dedicated biker will probably want both kinds.

You can put an ebike on just about any old car mounted bike rack for easy transportation if it holds the entire bike at the same time. Racks that require you to remove one or both wheels usually will not work (depending on the model of ebike you happen to have) as part of the drive mechanism for the motor is often in one or both wheels and you really do not want to go messing around with that. While not always a problem,if unsure, you’d better think twice. To be on the safe side, your best bet when looking into car mounted bike racks is to choose one that lets you put the entire ebike on it without taking anything apart. These are more convenient anyway as when you get to your destination, you can simply unhook the bicycle and go, without having to put anything back together first.

Car mounted bike racks generally come in two varieties: trunk or rear mounted bike racks or roof mounted bike racks. You’ll probably be better off with a trunk mounted or rooftop bike rack. Of course that depends on what kind of trunk or lift gate your car has. Roof mounted bike racks do come for whole bikes but these can be interesting when going under low overpasses or garages. Still, when investigating a way to carry your favorite ebike over a good distance, you will definitely need a bike rack.

For the type of rack that allows you to carry stuff on your bike, you’ll find many different options. They work equally as weel with ebikes as with standard bicycles. Lots of ebikes already come with bike racks in front or back, but if you ebike doesn’t, you can find a new rack very inexpensively online. The kind of rack that fits on a bike is is a flat wire shelf that holds things in place. Baskets can also be attached to the racks or the handlebars. You can use zip ties or thick bungee cords of even sturdy rope, if you remember your scouting lessons. Panniers can be attached to the bike racks on the sides to hold up even more things. If you’re going to use your ebike for shopping a bike rack or a folding basket is a must. You don’t want to have to fiddle with those plastic bags, do you.
