Don’t Let Your Boat Sink Into Oblivion Under Your Care!

March 15th, 2013

If you own a boat, you need to make sure that you take good care of it so that it can provide you its service for a long time. Whether you use the boat for fishing, sporting activities or other recreational activities, you need to carry out proper maintenance to prolong the lifespan of your boat. A well-maintained boat will give you optimum service for a long time, and it will save you a lot of money by avoiding those expensive repairs. There are simple tips to care for your boat which include:

1. Cleaning the boat regularly

You can keep the gel coat clean by washing away the salt water as soon as possible. Leaving the water on the boat for too long can cause damage. Hose down the exterior and underneath of the boat when you return from your activities as this will help to prevent salt build-up. Having a hose on the boat will make this task easy and convenient because you can do it while the boat is still on the ramp. Make sure that the boat dries completely after every wash.

2. Applying polish and wax

You need to polish the coat every couple of months. The storage location will determine the frequency because a boat that is permanently moored will require more polish than one that is stored. Using the right polish product that is recommended for boat use will help to protect the surface. Waxing can also help to protect the finish from UV damage. Use a non-skid cleaner to clean the deck.

3. Proper engine care

Make sure that you flush out the engine any time you take it out on salt water. You should read the owner manual to learn how to take care of the engine between services. Use a water displacer like WD40 or CRCS to spray under the cowl at least twice a year. You should also inspect the condition of the propeller and anything that can compromise the boats performance. Just like your car, the boat needs regular service and you need to ensure that you get professional service so that your boat performs at its optimum condition.

4. Checking parts and accessories

You need to make sure that you check all the parts and accessories on a regular basis and replace any defective parts immediately. Make sure that you have all the safety gear that is recommended. Your safety handbook will contain a list of items ranging from life jackets, a fire extinguisher and paddles, to buckets, torches and a compass among other items. Make sure that you have all the items in your boat and they are in good working condition.

5. Purchase a boat cover or store it under a portable tent

Having a boat cover is essential because it helps to protect your boat from harsh weather. This important accessory will ensure that your boat does not wear fast. The covers come in different styles and sizes, and are made of different materials, to cater for different types of boats. They are a cost effective way of protecting your investment. Also, if you prefer a portable tent, that works too because it will shield your boat from the harsh weather elements.

Also, make sure that you learn boat safety and handling rules so that you can enjoy spending quality time on the water without unpleasant incidences. Happy boating!
