Better Boating Utilizing Proper Boating Equipment

January 8th, 2009

Picture yourself lying back enjoying the calm of the vast body of water, hearing the waves gently crashing upon the hull while you take in the relaxing surroundings. There’s no comparison for that feeling of relaxation – besides the sense of security that results from the being prepared which led you here initially.

Boating Safety
There’s several steps you can take to make your boating trip a safe, convenient and pleasurable activity. Maintaining your boat means a lot more than just ensuring the boat looks great. There are many practical boating items which are not only appealing in their aesthetic design, but also provide added safety and security to both your boat and passengers alike.

For example, most boat trailers come equipped with a basic, manual winch to help you load the boat onto the trailer. You can use an electric winch to make loading and transporting your boat a breeze. These winches run off your car’s battery but are also safer than using a manual winch. Also, pulling the vessel using tie-down straps and a protective wrap undoubtedly will minimize any expensive and unattractive damage caused by traveling on the roads.

If you’re going to be boating, there’s a good chance that you’ll have to tie up to a dock at some point. Weather conditions, such as wind, rain, or run off can make even a quiet pond rise or fall, so make sure you have a buffer between your boat and the dock to prevent your boat from taking damage. For protection from the harsh wood of the dock, you can use bumpers to prevent the outer finish from rubbing off. Several good quality ropes are also essential equipment for your boat, not only to dock it securely, but also to facilitate loading it onto your trailer.

Communications Equipment
Whether you are using wind or electric power, be safe by keeping in contact with the shore or others in your party. Standard radio communication equipment is a must; and the ever prevalent and highly accessible GPS systems available today can bail you out if your radio crashes on you.

It’s important to keep extra cans of gas on hand to avoid running out if you’re on the water longer than anticipated. Another option you should consider is a convertible top to protect you in the event of a sudden storm. Your passengers will enjoy the fact that it keeps your boat dry on the inside.

After getting the necessary equipment for communication, safety and aides, you should base other purchases on the way you plan to use your boat. A boat used mostly for fishing will have, by far, much different ‘needs’ than one used for, say, water skiing.

In order to determine what equipment you will need for your boat, you must first determine what its primary function will be. Information about boating
