Snowshoeing: The Other Winter Sport

Snowboarding and skiing have been the spotlight sports of the winter, but have you ever been snowshoeing? If not, then it’s time you hit the mountain trails with snowshoes on your feet.

Here are six (6) tips to make your first experience go smoothly…

1. Pick snowshoes that are lightweight. This is probably the most important factor in selecting snowshoes. These bad boys can range from super light, not more than a pound a piece, to weighing several pounds for each shoe. Imagine lugging around a brick on the bottom of you foot for a couple of miles - NOT FUN! Always pick the lightest snowshoe that seems to fit comfortably. (more…)

About to try Scuba? Nothing to Fear!

Scuba diving is an awesome adventure. The shapes, the colours, the life, the weightlessness of the water; what you experience beneath the surface of the water are unequaled anywhere else on the earth. Keep in mind also that with 71% of our planet covered with water, there is a lot to explore.

As with all sports, scuba diving has its potential dangers, but proper preparation will keep you safe, and the rewards are well worth the effort.

Maybe you have been one of those who have thought of learning to scuba, but have been kept from even trying because of hesitations and fears of one sort or another. This is a common emotion, and it is easily remedied.

One of the most common fears is of being close to marine creatures. (perhaps you are picturing “Jaws”!) If you have been one of those feeling hesitant about this, some simple education can help. Many fears of being in close proximity with creatures from below the surface of the sea have come from years of misinformation from television and movies. These fears are usually unwarranted. Climbing on snow and ice

One of the most dangerous, yet exciting sport is ice climbing. If you’re thinking of going on an ice climbing adventure, you need to learn the basics of climbing. Enthusiasts make ice climbing a lifetime pursuit. If you want to climb steep ice slopes, you need gears such as crampon and ice axes, on top of the usual rock climbing gears. Before you try climbing on ice, some may suggest that you practice climbing on dry rocks in the summer. The basic ice climbing gears are crampons and ice picks. As an added tip, don’t go buying cheap ice climbing tools. Ice climbing is definitely not for the faint hearted. There are ice slopes that can’t be climbed by individuals.
